Tuesday Tool Series #9: The Live Board
Tuesday tool series, article 9 of 19. The tool: the Live Board at theoddsgap.com/?live=1
You are watching a match and you like what you see. You open your app, find the in-game line, and bet it. Thirty seconds, done.
What you did not see is that every other book had a different number at the same moment, and the differences are bigger than anything you see before a game starts. Before Zverev and Bublik started, the major US books had Zverev between -307 and -340. Thirty-one minutes in, they had him anywhere from -235 to -320. Same match, same score, same second.
In-play prices move every few seconds, and every book moves at its own speed. Some react to a point the instant it ends. Some take a minute. For that minute, the books are pricing slightly different matches, and whichever book you happen to have open decides which one you are betting.
What the tool does
The Live Board is the Line Shop for games in progress. Turn on the LIVE pill on the Line Shop and the board switches to every game being played right now, with every book's in-game prices side by side, the best price on each side highlighted, and how long the game has been going on every card.
It refreshes every 60 seconds. Tap any card's All Books button and it opens the full ladder for that game: every book, both sides, best to worst.
Pinnacle appears on the ladder for reference, because its in-game line is the sharpest read of what the market thinks is happening. It is never counted as the best price. Polymarket US appears when it is trading the game, with its fee already taken out, so its number compares straight across. Offshore books are hidden by default, as they are everywhere on the site.
A real example
Zverev against Bublik, 6:40 AM ET, 31 minutes in. Here is Zverev's moneyline, best to worst:
- BetRivers: -235
- BetParx: -245
- BetMGM: -275
- Polymarket US: -276
- Fanatics: -280
- theScore Bet: -300
- DraftKings: -307
- FanDuel: -320
Pinnacle, for reference: -410.
Two things are happening at once.
The spread is wide. $100 on Zverev at BetRivers profits $42.55. The same $100 at FanDuel profits $31.25. That is $11.30 for picking the right app, on a favorite, in the middle of a match. On Bublik, the gap is bigger: +250 at FanDuel against +180 at BetRivers, $70 apart on $100.
The books disagree about which way the match went. Before the first serve, BetRivers had Zverev at -335. Thirty-one minutes later it had him at -235, a much better price, as if Bublik had gained ground. Pinnacle went the other way, from -307 at the close to -410, as if Zverev was pulling away. FanDuel sat in between. Those may not be three opinions about tennis so much as three books updating at different speeds, and for that minute, at least one of them was likely behind.
That is the whole case for a live board. Before a game, books mostly agree. During one, they can be pricing different moments.
A live hedge, worked through
Say you had taken Bublik before the match at +260, FanDuel's closing price, for $100. If he wins, you collect $360.
Thirty-one minutes in, you want out. To lock in the same result either way, you bet Zverev with enough to return $360 if he wins:
- At BetRivers, -235: bet $252.54 on Zverev. Either way you get back $360 on $352.54 staked. You lock in $7.46.
- At FanDuel, -320: bet $274.29 on Zverev. Either way you get back $360 on $374.29 staked. You lock in a $14.29 loss.
Same ticket, same moment, a $21.75 swing on which book you hedge at. The Hedge Calculator does this math for any two prices; the live board is how you find the second price.
How to use it
Turn on LIVE. On the Line Shop, tap the red LIVE pill. The count beside it is how many games are in progress right now.
Find your game. Filter by sport or search a team or player. Each card shows how long ago it started, and the best price on each side with the book's logo.
Open the ladder. Tap All Books on the card for every book's price on both sides.
Check the time. The header shows when the board last updated. In-play prices are only worth anything for about a minute. If the stamp is old, refresh.
Tap to add. Tapping a price adds it to your Bet Slip.
Afterward, look at the chart. For NFL, college football and MLB games, the game page keeps a record of how the market moved through the whole game.
That chart is Monday Night Football, Bills at Rams, which went to overtime and finished 37-34. It is drawn from Pinnacle's line as a record of how the market moved, not a price anyone could take.
The method
Every minute, the board reads every book's in-game prices for the games in progress. Each card shows the best price on each side among the books you have selected. Exchange prices are only shown when they are fresh, and any quote older than our cutoff is dropped, never shown greyed out. Pinnacle is shown but never counted as best. Kalshi is not on the live board.
The in-game charts on game pages use Pinnacle readings taken about every 15 minutes, so a big moment can show up as much as 15 minutes after the play. The board itself is the faster of the two.
The methodology page covers how every price on the site is read.
What it does not do
This is the section nobody else writes, so here it is.
It cannot promise a price is still there. A minute is a long time in a live market. Books suspend betting after big moments, and a price that looked best can be gone when you tap it. The board shows you where the books were at the last refresh.
A lagging book is not free money. When one book is behind the others, the gap is real for as long as it lasts, which may be seconds. The book can reject the bet, re-price it, or suspend the market. Books also limit accounts that consistently bet into slow lines.
Not every game, not every book. The board shows what books are pricing in play at that moment. Some books do not offer in-game lines on some sports, and a game drops off when it ends.
It does not tell you who will win. Pinnacle's line is a strong read of the market, but a read is not a result. Nothing here tells you what to bet.
The point
Before a game, shopping a line is worth a few dollars. During one, when every book is updating at its own speed, it can be the difference between locking a profit and locking a loss on the same ticket.
The Live Board is free with Live Beta, which is free with an email address.
